Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein foods contain the nutrients you need without too many calories. Try some of these options:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables
  • Switch to skim or 1% milk
  • Make at least half your grains whole
  • Vary your protein food choices
  • Keep your food safe to eat – learn more at www.FoodSafety.gov

Make Better Choices
When you compare what you eat to your Daily Food Plan, is there room for improvement? For example, do you eat many sweets or fried foods? Do you drink sugary drinks regularly? Do you eat too few vegetables or whole grains? Does eating out make it difficult to stay on track?
Everyone is different. Think about what YOU eat and drink. How can you make better choices? How can you be more active? The SuperTracker can help you identify changes you should make.
Learn how you can make better choices from these sections. Making these changes and sticking with them can help you manage your body weight.

  • Eat the Right Amount of Calories for You
  • Decrease Portion Sizes
  • Eat Fewer Empty Calories
  • Focus on Foods You Need
  • When Eating Out, Make Better Choices
  • Cook More often at Home
  • Increase Physical Activity
  • Decrease Screen Time

Cook More Often at Home
Over the last few decades, Americans have been eating out more and cooking at home less often. When you cook at home, you can often make better choices about what and how much you eat and drink than you do when eating out. Cooking can also be a fun activity and a way for you to spend time with family and friends.
Getting Started:

  • If you don’t usually cook, start gradually. Make it a goal to cook once a week and work up to cooking more often.
  • A healthy meal starts with more vegetables and fruits and smaller portions of protein and grains. Don’t forget dairy – make it the beverage with your meal or add fat-free or low-fat dairy products to your plate. You don’t have to eat from every food group at each meal, but thinking about the food groups can help you build a healthy meal.
  • Planning ahead can help you make better food choices. Keep healthy staples on hand, such as dried fruit, whole wheat pasta, “no-salt-added” canned vegetables, and frozen seafood.
  • Experiment with healthy recipes and look for ways to make your favorite recipes healthier. Use spices and herbs to add more flavor instead of adding salt or fat.
  • To help manage how much you eat, start by putting a small portion of food on your plate, and only eat seconds if still hungry.

Announcements
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Important Changes to MyNutriKids
The Aledo ISD’s Child Nutrition Department is excited to announce some enhancements to our online school meal payment service. We have transitioned your existing MyNutrikids.com account to a new service called mySchoolBucks.

This website provides a number of key features that you will find beneficial including:
  • Scheduled recurring payments
  • A convenience fee of $1.95 is charged per transaction (multiple students can be included in one transaction)
  • Automatic deposits when your child’s account balance runs low
  • Extended purchase history for the past 90 days
  • Low balance email notifications (this feature will not transfer so you will need to set up the low balance email notifications in mySchoolBucks)
If you already have a MyNutrikids.com account, you will NOT need to create a new account with mySchoolBucks. Your existing login username and password will remain the same. Children that are associated with your account will also carry over to the new service. Now that the transition is complete you will be automatically redirected to mySchoolBucks where you can begin using the new service. Parents with an existing MyNutrikids.com account will receive an introductory email from mySchoolBucks, which will provide instructions on how to use this new service.
For more information about mySchoolBucks please visit: http://www.learnmyschoolbucks.com/Parent
If you have any questions please call Child Nutrition Office at 817-441-5142.
Elementary or Intermediate students whose cafeteria account reaches the charge limit of -$25.00 will be provided with a Snack Meal. Students with a negative cafeteria balance will not be allowed to purchase snacks or extras until their balance is brought current. Negative balances will be communicated to parents via our School Messenger Call System.

School meals meet USDA standards requiring age appropriate calorie and portion limits, larger and more varied servings of veggies and fruits and more whole grains. All students selecting a school meal must include a fruit or veggie serving on their tray at breakfast and lunch.
